Memoirs from the Night

After 25 years of being away from raccoon hunting at night with a hound, through a series of events, our house pet motivates me to return to the woods again. This time, in the Cornhusker State of Nebraska. I grew up hunting in the Ozarks of the Show-Me State of Missouri. This time, with a Redbone coon hound that has been part of our family since he was a pup and kept in the house the past four years. I grew up with Black and Tan hounds that were never allowed in the house and were kept in pens outside. What I find in these nights about this dog and myself I did not expect. I get to experience his enthusiasm doing what he was bred to do, up close and personal, which I had forgotten about in a hound. What I find out about myself is I’ve changed since the nights of my youth hunting. Now, I have a Partner I’m learning to honor, even in my hunting.
